 Services

+ Primary Care

A primary care practice serves as the patient’s first point of entry into the health care system, and it should remain the focal point for all the patient’s health care needs & services. Our primary care practice provides patients with ready access to their own personal medical provider, also known as the primary care provider (PCP), who delivers comprehensive and long-term continuing care. The PCP is responsible for collaborating with other health professionals and overseeing the overall function of the patient’s health care team.

+ Behavioral Health

Everyone experiences situations in life, whether expected or unexpected, that affect our overall ability to function on a personal or professional level. Life events such as grief and loss, trauma, aging and health changes, marital issues/divorce, substance abuse or a world-wide pandemic, to name a few, affect our emotional health and well-being. You may be distracted, have difficulty sleeping or are sleeping too much, have lost your appetite or are eating more than you usually do. These may be responses to the changes around you, or could be signs and symptoms of depression and/or anxiety. Behavioral health is just as important as physical health but is often neglected due to negative stigma and myths. Many also do not realize that behavioral health ties in closely with our physical health and may manifest itself in physical symptoms such as headaches, upset stomach and increased blood pressure and pulse. Help is available. The Ke Ola Mamo Clinic provides behavioral health services to help you navigate your feelings and emotions and create a plan to manage these transitions. Our behavioral health provider creates a safe place for you to openly share and address your concerns. Services are provided individually, as a couple or can include the family unit. We service all age groups from keiki to kupuna.

About our Kauka (Doctor)

Dr. Nicole Māhealani Lum, DO
Family Medicine & Geriatrics

Dr. Lum’s path to helping people heal started generations ago. She descends from a lineage of healers, including a Kahuna Lāʻau Lapaʻau, her great grandmother who was born in Waipiʻo Valley on Hawaiʻi Island. Dr. Lum was raised in a kauhale on ancestral lands in ʻAiea, which her family has stewarded since before the Mahele. She was fortunate to receive her education in Kapālama at her father’s alma mater, Kamehameha Schools, then went on to attend her mother’s alma mater, the University of San Francisco, where she earned her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Biology & Chemistry. Dr. Lum’s path to medicine led her to the Andrew Taylor Still University School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona.

Upon achieving her medical degree, Dr. Lum returned to Hawaii to complete her medical training. She attended the University of Hawaii Family Medicine Residency Program, then went on to sub-specialize in Geriatrics at the University of Hawaii Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program at Kuakini.

Dr. Lum is double-board certified in Family Medicine & Geriatrics and has served as the Physician at Ke Ola Mamo Clinic since 2018. She currently provides primary care to patients 19 years old and over, but her passion is caring for kūpuna. In her spare time, Dr. Lum enjoys dancing hula, making lei, learning lomi, and spending time with her husband and son at their home in ʻAiea, where Dr. Lum still resides in the kauhale with extended ʻohana.

Aloha mai kākou, I am honored and humbled to serve our community at Ke Ola Mamo’s Kipuka in Kuakini, alongside some of the most compassionate colleagues and most loving patients for which a doctor could hope. Our patients are our ʻohana, with whom I strive to share compassion, gratitude, humility, understanding, and most of all, aloha. My kuleana is to simply help people heal, as we all have the power to heal ourselves; it is within each and every one of us. Together on this journey to healing, we must strive everyday to remember that we are all the product of those who came before and the ancestors to those who have yet to come. Our people are strong, and I see a thriving lahui in our future. I am so grateful to be here, and I welcome you to our healing space — welina mai!

 FAQs

+ What is a D.O. and Osteopathic Medicine?

A D.O. is a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. DOs are fully licensed physicians who perform standard diagnosis & treatment of disease, and practice in all areas of medicine, comparable to a MD. However, DOs receive special training in Osteopathic Medicine. Osteopathic Medicine emphasizes the interrelated unity of all systems in the body, and the need for all systems to work together for the body to heal in times of illness. DOs receive additional training on the musculoskeletal system, the body’s interconnected system of nerves, muscles and bones, in order to understand the relationship between the structure & function of the body, and how a disruption in that balance can cause illness. DOs practice according to the latest science and technology, but also consider other treatment options to complement pharmaceuticals and surgery, such as Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT), a hands-on treatment DOs use to diagnose illness & injury and encourage the body’s natural tendency toward self-healing. Osteopathic physicians focus on prevention, tuning in to how a patient’s lifestyle and environment can impact their wellbeing. DOs strive to help patients become truly healthy in mind, body, and spirit.

+ What is Geriatric Medicine?

Geriatrics is the specialty that focuses on health promotion, prevention, and diagnosis & treatment of disease and disability in older adults, commonly age 65 years old and above. The overall goal of a geriatric doctor, or geriatrician, is to optimize the health of our aging population. A geriatrician is trained to work collaboratively with other health care providers to manage an array of diseases unique to older adults, such as memory loss, dementia, imbalance, falls, and end of life care.
