In 2023, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian welcomed Dr. Halena Kapuni-Reynolds as its first Curator of Native Hawaiian History and Culture. Based in Puna on Hawaiʻi Island, he works across exhibitions, public programs, scholarship, and community engagement to elevate Native Hawaiian history, culture, and perspectives on a national stage.
Join Ke Ola Mamo this Indigenous Peoples’ Day for a look at the work, responsibilities, and rewarding experiences of serving as a Smithsonian curator while staying connected to home, community, and culture.
